Personalized Christmas Gifts: A Portrait Gift Guide for Everyone on Your List

A Palace Portrait-style family portrait, half-unwrapped as a personalized Christmas gift in a candlelit drawing room

Every December brings the same quiet puzzle: what do you give the people who matter most, when the shops are full of things they will have forgotten by February? The personalized Christmas gifts that last tend to share one quality. They are about the person receiving them, not about the shop that sold them.

A portrait is the purest form of that idea. This guide goes recipient by recipient, from parents and grandparents to couples and devoted dog owners, with honest advice on timing, because every print and canvas is made to order.

Why a portrait makes a personalized Christmas gift that lasts

Most presents are used up, worn out or tidied away. A portrait goes on the wall and stays there: first part of the room, then, in time, part of the family's story.

Royal households understood this long before photography. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert made a tradition of giving each other works of art on birthdays, on anniversaries and at Christmas. Among Albert's gifts was a bracelet set with miniature portraits of their children, to which a new link was added as each child turned four. The idea has not aged a day: the gift that moves people most is often a picture of the people they love.

Our atelier composes each portrait from your photo, in the manner of the old masters: velvet and candlelight, a confident pose, the setting of a palace or a country estate. The likeness is drawn from your photo; the costume and the scene are reimagined. You see the portrait before you pay, and your first preview is free. When to order for delivery before Christmas

Every print and canvas is made for its recipient, only once you order. Production takes 3–5 business days, then your portrait ships with tracking. With Standard shipping, most orders arrive within 7–14 business days in total, depending on the destination; Express, where offered for your address, is available at checkout if you need it sooner.

In practice, the earlier the better, especially for an address abroad. Carriers are at their busiest in the weeks before Christmas, so leave yourself a margin rather than aiming for the last possible day.

The delivery time that counts is the one for the recipient's country, not yours, so plan from their address. And if Christmas is already too close, don't give up on the idea: the last-minute option is described further down.

For parents and grandparents

Parents and grandparents are the classic "they already have everything" recipients, and often the ones most moved by a portrait. A few ideas that work especially well:

  • The family, gathered in one portrait. Choose Family for three or four people. You can upload one group photo, or up to four separate photos if the family is scattered across different cities, as so many are.
  • Their wedding photo, reimagined. An old wedding print, carefully scanned, can become a Couple portrait in the Golden Age or Duke & Duchess style.
  • A portrait of one of them. Noble Lady for a mother or grandmother with a taste for elegance; Aristocratic Estate for a father who is happiest outdoors.

If the only copy of that wedding photo is a print in an album, scan it rather than photographing it under a lamp: a flatbed scan avoids glare and keeps the faces sharp.

Aristocratic Estate, in the manner of the English country portrait: a gift for grandparents.

For grandparents, it is hard to beat three or four grandchildren gathered in a single frame. Our custom family portrait page shows how a whole family comes together in one composition.

A practical note: a portrait currently includes up to four people. For a larger family, several portraits, one per household, can hang side by side as a small family gallery. That also makes a lovely shared present from brothers and sisters.

For couples

Your parents, your closest friends, or the two of you: for a couple, a portrait turns a favorite photo into something much closer to an heirloom. Choose Couple, then upload one photo of them together or two separate photos.

Duke & Duchess brings brocades, jewels and an assured pose; Palace Portrait sets them among marble columns and heavy drapery. Both suit a couple who enjoy a little grandeur, and both look splendid above a sofa or a sideboard.

If the portrait is for your own partner, the hardest part is choosing the photo. Pick one where both faces are sharp and well lit, even if it isn't the most glamorous picture you have: the atelier takes care of the glamour.

For dog and cat lovers

Some people on your list will be most delighted by a portrait of someone who can't unwrap presents: their dog or their cat. A royal pet portrait is playful in idea and serious in execution, and that combination is exactly what makes it such a good gift.

Royal Court, a natural choice for a cat with an air of quiet superiority.

Military Commander and Royal Court are favorites for dogs. A cat with an air of quiet superiority looks perfectly at home in Royal Court or Noble Lady. And if the recipient and their pet are inseparable, Person + Pet portrays one person together with their companion.

For a photo, look for one taken at the animal's eye level, with the eyes and both ears in view. Our royal pet portraits page shows the idea for dogs, cats and other companions.

For the person who has everything

Collectors, the well-traveled, the ones who buy what they want the moment they want it: for them, a present only works if it could not have existed without you. A portrait passes that test, because it depends on two things only you can bring, the right photo and the knowledge of who they love.

Think about what they would never commission for themselves: their dog in a general's uniform, their grandchildren as a royal family, themselves portrayed in the grand manner of a court painter. The surprise is half the gift, and the other half hangs on the wall for years.

If you need a photo without giving the game away, ask someone close to them: a brother or sister, a partner or a grown-up child usually has the right picture on their phone.

Which style for whom?

Seven styles, seven moods. A quick guide for Christmas gifts:

  • Royal Court: velvet, ermine and gold, for anyone who deserves the full ceremony, and for dogs who already behave like monarchs.
  • Noble Lady: silks, pearls and a gentle light, for a mother, a grandmother or a sister with a love of elegance.
  • Duke & Duchess: brocades and an assured pose, for a couple with a sense of occasion.
  • Military Commander: braid, gilded epaulettes and a heroic stance, for a father with a sense of humor, or for the family dog.
  • Palace Portrait: marble columns and gilded interiors, for a family portrait meant to be the centerpiece of a room.
  • Golden Age: deep shadow and luminous light, for a quieter, more intimate portrait, and for an old photo reimagined.
  • Aristocratic Estate: an open landscape and a country house in the distance, for grandparents, walkers and anyone happiest outdoors.

You can try another style on the same photo before you order, so there is no need to decide everything on the first attempt.

Last-minute: the Digital Artwork by email

If it is too late for a print to arrive before Christmas, there is still an honest way to give a portrait on Christmas morning. The Digital Artwork is a high-resolution file of your portrait, sent by email shortly after your order. It is yours to print, frame and share for personal use.

A few ways to present it:

  • Reveal it on a tablet or on the television as the last present of the morning.
  • Print it at home on good card and slip it inside a Christmas card.
  • Have it printed and framed locally in the new year, choosing the frame together.

You can also add the Digital Artwork to an order for a print or a canvas: the file arrives by email shortly after you order, ready for the reveal, and the print or canvas follows by post.

Sending it straight to them

If the recipient lives far away, simply enter their address as the shipping address at checkout: the portrait travels directly to them, with tracking. The tracking link comes to you by email, so you can follow the parcel without spoiling anything.

A little discretion helps when the surprise is for someone who shares your home. A parcel with a canvas inside is hard to disguise, so consider having it delivered to a friend or to your workplace.

Print or canvas under the tree?

Both are made to order and both make a fine present; the choice depends on the recipient and on the room.

  • Fine Art Print. Detailed and delicate, delivered unframed so that you, or they, can choose a frame that suits their home. Lovely as a gift to post, on a bedside table or within a gallery wall. Sizes start at Petite (8 × 10 in).
  • Gallery Canvas. Stretched, with a mounting kit included, and ready to hang with no frame needed. The natural choice for a statement piece above a sofa or a bed.

Still unsure? Our guide to choosing a fine art print or canvas compares detail, texture, sizes and the rooms where each looks its best.

Christmas presents are often forgotten by spring; the portrait of a family, a couple or a much-loved dog tends to be remembered for years. Choose a photo, choose a style, and see the portrait before you decide.
