Royal portrait questions & answers
Everything you may wish to know before commissioning your portrait. If your question isn't here, write to us at contact@atelier-royal.com.
What type of photo should I upload?
A clear, well-lit photo where the face is easy to see gives the finest portrait. Avoid heavy filters, sunglasses and strong shadows across the face. For pets, choose a photo taken at their eye level, with the eyes and both ears in view.
We accept JPG, PNG, HEIC and WebP files up to 25 MB, at least 768 pixels on the shortest side. After you upload, we check your photo and tell you if a sharper or brighter one would give a better result.
Can I use a phone photo?
Yes. A photo from a recent smartphone is ideal, and iPhone photos in HEIC format are accepted. For the best detail, use the original photo from your library rather than a screenshot or a picture forwarded through a messaging app, which are often compressed.
Can you create portraits of pets?
Yes. Dogs, cats and other companions make wonderful royal portraits, and you can also choose Person + Pet to appear together with yours. Styles such as Military Commander and Royal Court are favorites for dogs.
Can I create a couple or family portrait?
Yes. Choose Couple for two partners or Family for three or four. You can upload one photo with everyone together, or up to four separate photos. A portrait currently includes up to four sitters.
Please make sure you have permission to use the photo of everyone shown. We ask you to confirm this before uploading.
What happens if I don't like the first portrait?
You see your portrait before you pay, and you only order the one you love. Your first preview is free, and you can try again up to 3 times for each portrait, with the same style or another one. You can also start again with a different photo, which comes with its own free preview.
Prints and canvases are made to order from the portrait you approve, so an order can't be cancelled or changed once it is placed. Take your time with the preview, and check your delivery address before you pay.
What is the difference between a fine art print and a canvas?
The Fine Art Print is printed on 250 gsm archival matte paper, without optical brighteners, and delivered unframed, ready for a frame of your choice. It looks lovely behind glass on a gallery wall. Sizes: 8 × 10, 12 × 16, 18 × 24 and 24 × 36 in.
The Gallery Canvas is printed on cotton-polyester canvas and stretched over a 4 cm (1.6 in) wooden frame with mirrored edges. It arrives with a mounting kit, ready to hang, with no frame needed. Sizes: 12 × 16, 16 × 20, 18 × 24 and 24 × 36 in.
How large are the prints?
- Petite: 8 × 10 in (approx. 20 × 25 cm), Fine Art Print
- Classic: 12 × 16 in (approx. 30 × 40 cm), print or canvas
- Salon: 16 × 20 in (approx. 40 × 50 cm), canvas
- Statement: 18 × 24 in (approx. 45 × 60 cm), print or canvas
- Grand: 24 × 36 in (approx. 60 × 90 cm), print or canvas
Each size has its own proportions (4:5, 3:4 or 2:3). Before checkout, you'll see exactly how your portrait sits within the size you choose. The Digital Artwork is a 4096 × 6144 pixel file.
How long does production take?
Every print and canvas is made to order. Production takes 3–5 business days, then your portrait ships with tracking. With Standard shipping, most orders arrive within 7–14 business days in total, depending on the destination; Express, where offered for your address, is available at checkout if you need it sooner.
The Digital Artwork is sent by email shortly after your order.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we deliver worldwide. The countries available are listed at checkout. Every parcel ships with tracking, and you'll receive the tracking link by email.
Depending on your country, import duties or taxes may be charged on delivery; these are paid by the recipient. See our Shipping Policy for details.
Is shipping free?
Yes. Standard shipping is free worldwide on every print and canvas, and so is Express shipping where it is offered for your address. Import duties or taxes charged by your country, if any, are not included.
Will the portrait look like the original person or pet?
Each portrait aims for a recognizable likeness, reimagined in a historical painting style, so clothing, setting and pose are artistic, and some features may be interpreted. A sharp, well-lit photo makes the biggest difference.
You always see and approve your portrait before paying. If it doesn't quite feel like them, try again before you order (up to 3 times for each portrait) or start from a different photo. Once an order is placed, it goes into production as approved, so likeness alone is not a reason for a refund.
Are personalized items refundable?
Each portrait is made to order for you, so we can't accept returns or refunds for a change of mind. But if your print or canvas arrives damaged or defective, has a print-quality issue, or you receive the wrong item, tell us within 14 days of delivery with a photo, and we'll reprint it or refund you.
For the Digital Artwork, you can cancel within 14 days of your order for a full refund, as long as you have not yet downloaded it. Your statutory rights are not affected. Read the full Refund Policy.
Can I buy a digital version?
Yes. The Digital Artwork is a high-resolution file of 4096 × 6144 pixels, without watermark, sent by email with a secure download link valid for 30 days. It's yours to print, frame and share for personal use.
Prints and canvases don't include the digital file, but you can add the Digital Artwork to the same order. Before paying, you'll be asked to confirm that you want the file delivered immediately and that your right of withdrawal ends once the download begins.
How do I care for the print or canvas?
- Hang it away from direct sunlight and from sources of heat or humidity, such as radiators and bathrooms.
- Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Never use water or cleaning products.
- Handle prints by the edges with clean, dry hands, and frame them behind glass (ideally UV-protective) to keep them at their best.
- For canvases, avoid pressing on the front or the back of the canvas.
