How to Choose the Best Photo for a Custom Portrait
What a portrait keeps from your photo and what it reimagines, plus a five-point checklist for people, couples, families and pets, phone photos and old prints.
Atelier Royal
A memorial portrait can keep a presence close. From a cherished photo, we create a dignified portrait of someone you miss, or of a companion who was part of the family.
The styles
Some styles lend themselves to remembrance: the deep shadow and luminous light of the Golden Age, the calm grandeur of a Palace Portrait, the open landscape of Aristocratic Estate. Choose the one that feels like them. You can try another before you order.
Velvet, ermine and gold: the full ceremony of a court portrait, lit as if by candlelight.
Silks, pearls and a gentle light, in the refined spirit of eighteenth-century portraiture.
Brocades, jewels and a composed, confident pose: nobility at its most assured.
A braided uniform, gilded epaulettes and a heroic stance, in the tradition of the great officer portraits.
Marble columns, heavy drapery and gilded interiors: a portrait set within the grandeur of a palace.
Deep shadow and luminous light, in the spirit of the Dutch Golden Age masters.
An open landscape, a country house in the distance and the easy elegance of the English country portrait.
The gallery
Companions first, then people: a selection of portraits created in the atelier with fictional sitters, as illustrative examples.

Choosing the photo
Often there is only one photo, and it is not perfect. It can still become a beautiful portrait: what matters most is a face that is clear and not too small. If the photo is a print, scan it rather than photograph it: a flatbed scan at 600 dpi or more keeps far more detail. If you photograph it instead, lay it flat near a window and avoid reflections.
Black-and-white photos work too: the colors of eyes and hair are then interpreted, so if a color photo exists, compare the two. Take your time. Your first preview is free, and nothing is printed until you approve it. Our guide to choosing a photo for a custom portrait has more advice for old and imperfect photos.
Questions
Yes. A good scan of a printed photo works well, and so does a photo of the print taken flat, in daylight, without reflections. We accept JPG, PNG, HEIC and WebP files up to 25 MB, at least 768 pixels on the shortest side, and after you upload we tell you if a sharper or brighter photo would give a better result. Your photos are used only to create your portrait.
Yes. From a cherished photo, we create a dignified portrait in the manner of the old masters. Palace Portrait, with its marble columns and heavy drapery, and Golden Age, with its luminous light, suit a memorial well: you can begin with Palace Portrait. If others appear in the photo, crop it before uploading, as long as the face stays sharp and not too small. For two people, such as grandparents, choose Couple.
A companion who was part of the family deserves a place of honor too. Choose Pet and upload a photo where their eyes are clear, ideally taken at their eye level. Golden Age, with its deep shadow and luminous light, is a gentle choice: you can begin with Golden Age, and try another style before you order.
Each portrait aims for a recognizable likeness, reimagined in a historical style, so clothing, setting and pose are artistic and some features may be interpreted. You see the portrait before you pay, and you can try again up to 3 times for each portrait, or start from a different photo. Once an order is placed, it goes into production as approved and can't be cancelled or changed, so take all the time you need before you order.
