Parents and grandparents are famously hard to shop for. Ask what they would like and the answer rarely changes: nothing, really, we have everything. They mean it. What they treasure cannot be found on a shelf: the family they raised, gathered together; a memory they share with you; a reason to pause in the hallway and smile.
That is where a portrait comes in. The most successful personalized gifts for grandparents and parents are about people rather than things, and a portrait is about nothing else. Here are our portrait ideas for Mother's Day, Father's Day, the grandparents and their wedding anniversary, followed by the dates to remember and how early to order.
A gift for the people who gave you everything
A portrait in the manner of the old masters does something a framed snapshot cannot. It starts from a favorite photo, keeps the faces and expressions that make it yours, and reimagines everything else, from the clothing to the setting and the light, in the language of European portraiture. The result reads less like a souvenir and more like an heirloom: something that belongs on the wall of a family home and, one day, in the hands of the grandchildren.
It also answers the usual worries about gifts for older parents. It takes up no cupboard space, needs no batteries and will not end up at the back of a drawer. You see the portrait before you pay, and it can be delivered as a fine art print, a gallery canvas or a digital artwork by email. For every other occasion, from birthdays to Christmas, our page of personalized portrait gifts gathers the essentials in one place.
Mother's Day: portrait ideas for Mom
There is no single right portrait for a mother, but three ideas work particularly well.
- A portrait of her alone. Many mothers have hundreds of photos of their children and almost none of themselves. A portrait just of her, in a style that suits her, says that she matters too. Noble Lady, with its silks, pearls and gentle light, is a natural choice.
- Mom with her grown children. Our Family portrait gathers three or four people. Mom surrounded by her two or three grown children, together again in one frame, is a lovely way to mark the years.
- Mom and her companion. If her dog or cat follows her from room to room, a Person + Pet portrait puts the two of them side by side.
If your mother lives in Britain, remember that Mothering Sunday comes much earlier than the American Mother's Day, usually in March, so Mum's portrait needs to be ordered in late winter.

Father's Day: for Dad, and from the dog
Fathers are often the hardest of all to buy for, which is exactly why a portrait lands so well. For a dad with a sense of ceremony, Military Commander dresses him in a braided uniform and gilded epaulettes. For the one who is happiest in the garden or on a country walk, Aristocratic Estate sets him in an open landscape with a country house in the distance. For the quiet reader, Golden Age frames him in deep shadow and warm light.
And then there is the gift that reliably makes fathers laugh: the present from the dog. A royal portrait of the family dog, signed on the card with a paw print, is affectionate and just a little grand. If Dad and the dog are inseparable, commission a portrait of Dad with his dog instead, and let them share the frame like a country lord and his loyal hound.

Personalized gifts for grandparents: the grandchildren, together
Ask grandparents what they would love most, and many will tell you: all the grandchildren in one place. A portrait can make that happen even when real life doesn't. A custom family portrait gathers three or four people, and you can upload one group photo or up to four separate photos, which is ideal when cousins live in different cities and have never been photographed together.
A few ideas to adapt to your family:
- Three or four grandchildren, gathered for Grandma and Grandpa.
- Grandmother, mother and daughter: three women, one family line.
- Grandma and Grandpa with their first grandchild.
For babies and toddlers, choose the sharpest, best-lit photo you have: a small face leaves little room for error, and some features may be interpreted.
Two practical points. First, a Family portrait includes people only; if the family dog is part of the story, give it a portrait of its own. Second, when the photos show children, check with their parents first. Before you upload, we ask you to confirm that you have permission to use the photo of everyone shown, and your photos are used only to create your portrait, then deleted after 30 days unless you order.
To keep the surprise, enlist the grandchildren's parents rather than the grandparents. Ask them to send the original photos by email or through a shared album, rather than forwarding them in a messaging app, which tends to compress them and soften the faces.
Their wedding photo, reimagined
For a silver or golden wedding anniversary, few gifts are as moving as the photo from their wedding day, reimagined as a formal portrait. Choose Couple when you create the portrait and upload the photo; the portrait is composed around their faces, in the style you choose. Golden Age gives it the quiet intimacy of the Dutch masters, all deep shadow and luminous light, while Duke & Duchess brings brocades, jewels and a composed, confident pose. Our page on a couple portrait from their wedding photo shows what is possible.
If the only copy is an old print, it needs to leave the album for a few minutes at most:
- Scan it if you can, or photograph it flat in soft daylight, holding your phone parallel to the print.
- Take it out from behind the glass of its frame first, to avoid glare and reflections.
- Check that both faces are sharp and reasonably large in the image; crop away the album page, never the couple.
Our guide to choosing the right photo covers old and imperfect photos in more detail. One lovely way to give it: present the portrait alongside the original print, so they can hold the day itself and the heirloom it has become.

Christmas, birthdays and Grandparents Day
Mother's Day and Father's Day are not the only moments. A portrait of the grandchildren is one of the most natural Christmas gifts for grandparents: opened on Christmas morning, it can be on the wall before New Year. For a milestone birthday, a portrait of the person alone, in the style that suits them best, marks the day with more ceremony than any cake. And in the United States, National Grandparents Day in September is a gentle excuse for a gift that never really needed one.
Think, too, about how it will be unwrapped. A gallery canvas needs no frame, which makes it easy to give on the day. A fine art print arrives unframed, so you can frame it yourself before giving it, or leave the recipient free to choose a frame that suits their home.
Which style suits which parent?
Each of our seven styles draws on a different tradition of European portraiture. As a starting point:
- Royal Court: for the natural head of the family, in velvet, ermine and gold, lit as if by candlelight.
- Noble Lady: for an elegant mother or grandmother, with the silks, pearls and soft light of the eighteenth-century salon.
- Duke & Duchess: for parents married for decades, confident and composed.
- Military Commander: for a father or grandfather with a sense of occasion, and for dogs with a sense of duty.
- Palace Portrait: for the whole family, among marble columns, heavy drapery and gilded interiors.
- Golden Age: for the thoughtful ones, in deep shadow and luminous light.
- Aristocratic Estate: for gardeners, walkers and lovers of the countryside.
You don't have to decide once and for all. After your free preview, you can try again up to three times for the same portrait, in the same style or another.
When to order for each occasion
Every print and canvas is made to order. Production takes 3–5 business days, then your portrait ships with tracking; with Standard shipping, most orders arrive within 7–14 business days in total, depending on the destination, and Express, where offered for your address, is available at checkout. As a rule of thumb, order at least three weeks before the day, and a little earlier for Christmas.
